Today’s Fitness Tip - Rest
Rest is a very underrated aspect of fitness. It seems counterintuitive to tell someone to STOP working if you’re in my position. I’m a guy who tells people to DO, not STOP…but that’s what I’m telling you to do.
Rest.
Take a couple days off during the week.
Rest a bit longer during your workouts.
Don’t do marathon workouts - I never train my clients longer than 40-45 minutes. It’s unnecessary and leads to more problems than solutions.
I get that it’s a no-no to tell people to work less in today’s world of “Biggest Loser”-land, but it’s true.
If your goal is to lose weight, you need to focus more on nutrition and less on the amount of time spent working out. Your workouts need to be done correctly otherwise you’ll burn out, get frustrated and/or hurt yourself…all of which ain’t cool.
The big thing nowadays is to sign up for “boot camps” that are done 5 days a week and “balls to the wall” every single day for upwards of an hour.
Not cool for most folks.
Most folks sit too much and don’t move enough and doing intense workouts 5 days in a row (or 6) will do more harm than good.
I’ve seen boot camps where people are being told to do sprints followed by plyometric-style jumping. Holy knee-joints breaking, Batman!
A hard workout does not necessarily equal a GOOD workout.
Soreness does not necessarily equal a GOOD workout or progress.
Puking sure as hell doesn’t equal a GOOD workout or progress.
I know I’m getting off point, so I’ll get back on.
Rest.
Chill out.
Don’t get into “punishment” mode with your workouts - you know what I mean…”I ate like crap this weekend so I have to work my butt off in workouts!” The math will never equal out.
Eat well, exercise intelligently and REST.
